Ready Player One, written by Ernest Cline, was recently brought to my attention because of my love for the 80’s, retro computer games and modern VR! So there was really no other choice than this book!
The story revolves around a young boy named Wade Watts in the year 2044, where the world has changed a lot for the worse! The only escapism Wade can get is within realms of the OASIS, which is a virtual reality simulator. Wade attends school & hangs out with his online friends all within the confides of the OASIS. It’s not until the creator of the OASIS dies that the games begin. James Halliday created OASIS after he became a recluse, and ever since it became live, poeple have been living their lives inside of it, even earning money through it. James (the Anorak) Halliday had no family or close friends to leave his fortunes to, so the day he died he released his greatest game ever, The hunt for his Egg! Who ever could find three keys which would open up three gates and then complete all the tasks within these gates, would win James Hallidays fortune and control over the OASIS!
The book itself has a few chapters setting the scene and introducing the characters to begin with, but as soon as the action starts, it does not stop! Ernest Cline has a real knack with his story telling to put you right in the middle of it all, the 80’s references (which there are a lot of, as James Halliday lived for 80’s pop culture) are perfectly described and the nostalgic feelings just come flooding back!
If you want to be immersed in a futuristic tale of adventure, love and loss, whilst experiencing the nostalgic feeling of your 80’s childhood the you need not look any further than Ready Player One.
This is by far the best book I have picked up in the last 5 years! Even Steven Spielburg has chosen to create this in to a movie in 2018, I mean, you can’t argue with Spielburg!
